Oregon Country Fair

I went to the Oregon Country Fair last weekend. It was a hippie music, art, and craft festival. It was lots of fun but a tad unsettling seeing so many women without shirts with their breasts painted. Luckily the men (mostly) kept their clothes on despite the heat.

I went surfing again. Liz brought her waterproof camera. Liz goes to CSUMB, only 15 minutes from my home and 45 minutes from UCSC. I think we will be good friends after this summer!

Tillamook Bay

I am in the little town of Garibaldi right now, which sits on the Northern end of Tillamook Bay. I am here for more field research.

I don't know if anyone consistently reads these, but I was here all last week and will be here all this week. I didn't bring my computer last time, hence the lack of new posts.

We are doing a subtidal survey of clams in the Tillamook, just like we did around the NOAA dock a few weeks ago. But this time we are looking at all the "target" species, not just gapers. And boy have we found lots of clams. But I'll get into that in another post later this week.

I don't have many pictures because we have been way too busy on the boats. Today we finished our 5th day of diving and this is the first day we were on the water less than 10 hours. Long days for sure!!
Last week while I was here I went to the Tillamook Cheese Factory with one of my coworkers, Kami.

The whole town of Tillamook smells like cows. My coworkers thought it was a little odd that I wasn't put off by the smell. It actually reminded me a little of my aunts old farm.

I sampled some cheese even though its not my favorite thing in the world to eat and then got some really tasty Marionberry Pie ice cream. It had chunks of "pie crust" in it, but I'm convinced that the chunks are the same as the chocolate chip cookie dough chunks, minus the mini chocolate chips. It was delicious though and now I am inspired to attempt to make my own pie ice cream. Maybe when I get back to santa cruz in September?

gnarly pounders

Today I went surfing!
I went with my housemate Hilary and another intern Liz who goes to CSUMB!
It was super fun and I was very surprised at how easily I was able to balance right off the bat since I haven't attempted surfing in about 3 years. I wasn't able to really ride a wave, but I stood up a few times.
I also learned a valuable lesson:
my car can hold 3 people and 3 surfboards, but only if I only plan to drive across the street because I can only see out my side mirror and 2/3 of my front windshield.
luckily, we only had to go across the street.

The cockles were really unhappy that we took them away from their home and they kept trying to use their foot to dig.

A clam uses it's muscular foot to burrow; it's long and flexible and looks a lot like a tongue.
They remind me of the pokémon Shellder.

birthday #236

yesterday I didn't have work (happy 4th!). Instead I celebrated with everyone here at Hatfield. It was a busy day!

there was a -2.6 tide at 7:30am

then I went clamming with my housemates so we could make a clam boil.
I also made pie for a potluck the whole housing unit had.
stars; sea creatures
(Note to self: make larger shapes and less of them)

We all ended the night sitting on the cobblestone beach watching fireworks. It was a good day.
